The World Bank’s Global Economic Prospects, published on 13 January, projects global growth of 2.6% in 2026 and 2.7% in 2027. Its central message combines resilience to trade uncertainty with an uneven recovery across countries. These are January forecasts, not full-year outcomes.
The average hides different markets
The report says roughly one in four developing economies remains poorer in per-person income terms than in 2019. Continued global growth can therefore coexist with pressure on households in individual markets.
For a cross-border business, a global growth number is a poor substitute for a country-level demand assessment. Customers buying the same subscription may face different income conditions, taxes and currency effects. Those differences can matter more for renewals than the worldwide average.
From trade uncertainty to incoming payments
Policy changes can affect procurement and inventories before they appear in final sales. An increase in orders might reflect stronger demand, or customers buying ahead of an expected disruption. Payment volume alone cannot distinguish the two.
An operating review can separate order counts, average prices, refunds, collection periods and customer location. This helps identify where a change occurs; it does not turn a macroeconomic forecast into a company revenue forecast.
Compare forecast vintages carefully
Reports from different institutions use different assumptions, publication dates and methods. Compare the forecast year and release date before interpreting a gap in their headline figures.
For payment businesses, the practical lesson is that accepting a local payment method addresses only part of entering a market. Purchasing power, merchant cash flow and local economic conditions still require their own assessment.
