Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, becoming the euro area’s 21st member. The fixed conversion rate is 1 euro to 1.95583 Bulgarian lev. Merchants serving Bulgarian customers face a change in accounting records as well as price labels.
The changeover timetable
Lev bank accounts converted automatically. Cash follows a transition: both currencies circulate during January, with the euro becoming the sole legal tender on 1 February. The Bulgarian National Bank exchanges lev notes and coins free of charge without a time limit.
Automatic bank conversion does not migrate a merchant’s order database. Till software, accounting systems, cached prices and exported reports can each hold their own currency settings.
Keep the original transaction
A purchase made in lev in 2025 and refunded in 2026 needs an auditable record of its original currency and amount, the converted amount and the refund. Replacing BGN with EUR in old records would lose that history. Rounding also needs attention: converting individual items can produce a different total from converting the final sum.
These are operational considerations arising from the changeover, rather than a claim that every merchant must use the same software procedure. Local requirements, contracts and acquiring arrangements determine the actual treatment.
One currency still leaves several payment questions
Euro pricing makes comparison with other euro area markets easier. It does not automatically equalise processing fees, settlement schedules or available payment methods. Merchants still need to check their provider arrangements.
Customer service should be able to explain how an old-currency purchase became a present-day refund. Finance teams should be able to trace the converted balance back to the underlying transactions. Those records are an important part of a smooth changeover.
