The ECB’s 13 August company survey finds that 92% of surveyed physical businesses accept cash, compared with 90% in 2024. Card acceptance remains broadly stable at 88%, while mobile payment acceptance rises from 36% to 68%.
Interviews covered 8,205 companies across the 21 euro area countries between February and April. The sample includes retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. Acceptance measures whether a company offers a method, not the share of transactions made with it.
The percentages overlap
A shop can accept cash, cards and mobile payments simultaneously. The figures therefore cannot be added as mutually exclusive market shares. Rising cash and mobile acceptance can indicate more choice rather than straightforward replacement.
Confusing acceptance with customer preference could lead a business to remove a method that remains useful in particular circumstances.
More than speed at checkout
Companies cite customer preferences, security and ease of handling among their considerations. They continue to value cash for privacy and reliability, while some also invest in cashless tills and self-service terminals.
Each method creates its own operating work: cash handling and change, or terminal connectivity and transaction enquiries. Compare the whole process, not only the customer’s final action.
Apply local evidence
A merchant can track actual usage, abandoned transactions caused by missing methods and available fallbacks during an outage. These measure different aspects of customer access.
The euro area survey provides context, not evidence that every country or business category has the same pattern.
